英語なんて当たり前？

最後の方の　The head of the Motion Picture Association of America,
Dan Glickman, said　で始まる文を取り上げてみましょう。

まず
The head of the Motion Picture Association of America, Dan Glickman,
said ですから
「米国映画協会のDan Glickman会長は言いました」ですね。「言いました」
とありますから何を言ったのかな？と考えて次に読み進みます。

すると
the U.S. government should take advantage of the spotlight と続いて
「米国政府は世間の注目を利用すべきだと」言ったことがわかりました。さ
てこの spotlight とは何でしょうか。今度はこの説明が次に続くかもしれま
せんね。こう考えてまた読んでいきますと・・・

that is on China in the run-up to the 2008 Olympics となって
「2008年オリンピック大会を目前に控えた中国が浴びる」 注目を利用すべ
きだと言っていることがわかりましたね。このthatは直前のspotlightを受
ける関係代名詞ですね。ではこの注目を何のために利用しようというので
しょうか。この疑問に答えてくれるのが次の部分ですね。

そして
to get Beijing to fight pirating more seriously. と目的を示して
「中国政府にもっと真剣に著作権問題と格闘させるために」利用しようと言
っていることがわかりましたね。

このように前からどんどん理解していけば、戻る必要はありませんよ。
